Most of us notice small changes in our eyesight and quietly adjust to them. We hold the phone a little further away, turn on one more light to read, or blame a long day at the screen. Often that is all it is. But some changes are the eye's way of asking for attention, and an eye examination is the only reliable way to tell the two apart.
Here are five signs that are worth a consultation with an ophthalmologist rather than a wait-and-see approach. None of them means something is definitely wrong. They simply mean it is time to have your eyes checked.
1. Blurred or fluctuating vision
Vision that is blurry at a distance, up close, or both, is the most common reason people visit an eye clinic. Sometimes the cause is simply a change in spectacle power. In other cases, blurring that comes and goes, or that is worse in one eye, can be linked to conditions such as cataract, changes in the retina, or blood sugar that is running high. An eye examination checks all of these in one visit.
2. Sudden floaters, flashes or a shadow in your vision
A few faint specks drifting across your vision are common and usually harmless. What deserves prompt attention is a sudden shower of new floaters, flashes of light like a camera going off at the edge of your vision, or a curtain or shadow moving across part of what you see. These can be signs that the retina needs to be examined soon, so please do not wait for your next routine check-up. Contact an eye clinic the same day.
3. Glare, halos and difficulty seeing at night
Finding it harder to drive after dark, seeing halos around streetlights, or feeling that colours look faded or yellowish are changes that people often put down to age. They can be early signs of cataract, where the natural lens inside the eye gradually turns cloudy. A consultation can confirm whether that is the case and, if so, discuss the right time to act.
4. Eye pain, redness or pressure that does not settle
Tired, itchy eyes after a long day usually settle with rest. Pain inside or around the eye, persistent redness, a feeling of pressure, or pain together with blurred vision or nausea are different. These need to be examined rather than managed at home with over-the-counter drops, because a few eye conditions are far easier to treat when they are caught early.
5. Headaches or eye strain after reading and screen work
Frequent headaches after reading, sewing or screen time, or the habit of squinting to see clearly, are often a sign that your eyes are working harder than they should. In children, watch for sitting very close to the television, rubbing the eyes, or losing interest in reading. Children rarely complain that their vision is blurry; they simply adapt to it, which is why a check-up before starting school matters.
When in doubt, have it checked
A comprehensive eye check-up looks at your vision, the pressure inside the eye and the health of the retina. It is quick, painless and the right first step at any age. If everything is fine, you leave with peace of mind. If something needs attention, you have found it early.
In short
Your eyes usually give you notice before a problem becomes serious. Listening to those signs, and acting on them with an eye examination, is one of the simplest ways to protect your sight for the years ahead. At Aditya Kamaraja Eye Clinic, walk-ins are welcome during consultation hours, all days except Tuesday.
